the poster for the West End show will be out soon.
this is a video from that day.
i had worked with James Earl Jones and Phylicia Rashad for the cover of Uptown magazine when they did the play on Broadway.
Some of the most humble and nice celebrities I have worked with.
The other leads are Sanaa Lathan and Adrian Lester.

exactly three years ago huricane katrina destroyed new orleans.
this portrait was taken a few days after it hit.
the photographer is clayton cubitt
when i arrived to the studio i was furious because i let a friend cut my hair and i didn't like it. ( she didn't follow my instructions)
after being there 10 or 15 minutes and starting to do my own hair and being wrapped up in my own self absorbed state. i started to notice a strange feeling in the air.
clayton had not heard from his mom or his brother in days. in seconds everything that i was worried about in my life ( not just my hair ) suddenly seemed trivial. in what is likely to be the darkest days in his life he took time to take my picture. besides being one of my favorite pictures of me. it has so much sentimental value.

i had styled penn badgley when he was 15. my stylist friend marc sifuentes was the fashion editor of a magazine and we went to LA to do a story on penn.
he was very shy and mysterious

well he turns 21 in a few weeks and is the star of the CW show "gossip girl".
a few weeks ago i styled him again with photographer sean watters for WNWN magazine based in LA.
he was a blast, no longer that shy little boy. he is still very down to earth.

rene garza banned from barney's

i was banned from barney's.. well... not me but some pictures i styled for a book project. the pictures are part of a series that clayton cubbit and i have been working on. it is called "damaged doll". a few pictures were asked to be included in the box set called the playground.
the pictures that clayton shot would not be printed by anyone. they had to be reproduced separately from the rest of the prints.

Don't call Playground a glossy magazine. "It's more of an editioned art piece," says co-founder Zach Gold. And how. Only 250 copies have been produced, most of which will hit select stores including Colette, Selfridges, Project No. 8 in New York and All Purpose in Los Angeles next week. Housed in an organic-looking, rubber-coated urethane box designed by Dror Benshetrit, Playground consists of unbound prints of works by artists and designers such as Jeremy Kost, Terence Koh, Scott King and Ellis Scott. And as the name suggests, the connections between the various subjects are tenuous at best since the contributors were given free reign in what they submitted. "A major factor of this project was just having the freedom to play completely: no theme, no overarching need to do anything by way of an advertiser or anything of that nature," explains co-founder Julie Ragolia. Indeed, no advertisements fill Playground's pages. Instead there are lush photographs, collages, illustrations and even one piece accompanied by its own CD soundtrack. Some of the more provocative images, such as Clayton James Cubitt's purple-toned bodily landscape, "Hot Pearl Snatch #12," even required Ragolia and Gold to make each of the 250 prints themselves, as no one was willing to replicate them. The self-financed endeavor, which has a planned two issues a year, emerged from Ragolia and Gold's mutual frustration with the parameters placed on their aesthetics, after 10 years of working in fashion as a stylist and photographer, respectively. Ragolia first worked for MTV, straight out of New York University, styling VJs and celebrity hosts. She soon segued into editorial gigs, as a contributing editor at Fader and doing stories for international editions of W and Vogue. Gold, a Parsons graduate, started out in advertising and then joined the creative direction team at BlackBook in the late Nineties. In 2000, he won the International Center of Photography's award for young photographer of the year, and has since done stints in indie magazines, hip-hop (he is also an illustrator) and, currently, what he terms, "big advertising stuff." As for the fate of Playground's works once they land in their buyers' homes, Gold gives his customers the same open-ended offer that he proposed to the contributing artists. "They can give them away, they can frame them, they can throw away the ones they don't like," he jokes. At a cool $600 a pop for the issue, the trash bin seems rather unlikely.

the video was directed by phil griffon.. he was a blast to work with...
i hope to work with him again..
i was glad that jon was open to the idea of wearing an overcoat.( not his usual style)
the coat is from MARC JACOBS...
for the second scene he wore a leather jacket that he takes off when he lays in bed.

BLACK SKINHEADS
what if it was the african kids that got their dress from the rude boys and danced at reggae and ska parties?
much research was done..
also shot by CLAYTON CUBITT

i used the skinhead book by nick knight as a reference..
many small details are historically correct...
like what buttons are buttoned, what brands were worn, etc..
i included some african accents to reflect the national pride that the original skinheads had.
skinheads didn't get a bad ( racist ) reputation until the early 80's.

i styled this video a few weeks ago in LA. it was a blast working on this. we spent a week in LA at the REGENT BEVERLY WILSHIRE. alicia has a personal stylist she uses to dress her for personal apperances. his name is wouri vice. i'm so glad we get along SO well.. he has been such a great help in letting me know her likes and dis-likes. and is just so much fun to be around. i was the fashion editor of a cover shoot for EBONY magazine with alicia that wouri worked on. that should be out in a few weeks. a few days later, i styled her for the cover of UPTOWN magazine. that was the day that alicia and wouri decided i should go to LA and style the video.
